Substance abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. Substance abuse results in 106,000 drug overdose deaths, and alcohol misuse contributes to 88,000 deaths in the United States each year. Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our nation, exacting over $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity, and health care. Alcohol misuse and alcohol use disorders alone account for $249 billion in costs related to crime, lost work productivity, and health care.
